Achievements
Through the years NCIV has had several programmes and projects to promote the rights of indigenous peoples. To list a few of our mayor achievements:
- From 1984 to 2008 NCIV, in cooperation with some of its European counterparts has supported well over 1,000 indigenous participants in international (mainly UN) fora and advocated actively itself at these fora through the Human Rights Fund for Indigenous Peoples (HRFIP), the Environmental Rights Fund for Indigenous Peoples (ERFIP) and the Indigenous Women's Biodiversity Network (IBWN). This resulted in some very significant outcomes such as: the establishment of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in 2000 and the adoption of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2007. Since 2002, NCIV has obtained an ECOSOC status. This means that NCIV officially has become an NGO with a Special Consultative Status within the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
- From 1998-2008 NCIV supported around 200 local projects of indigenous peoples' organisations through the Grants for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This contributed to the building of their capacities to promote their rights at the local level.
- The co-organization of several major conferences of indigenous peoples, including The Fourth Russell Tribunal (1980), The Kari-Oca Conference on Indigenous Peoples, Environment and Development (1992), The First Asian Indigenous Peoples Conference (1993) The First African Indigenous Women's Conference (1998) and The Indigenous Peoples' Millennium Conference (2001) has contributed to the building of the global indigenous movement.
- Successful lobby activities in The Netherlands, resulting, e.g. in the adoption of a policy document by the Netherlands government on indigenous peoples (1994), the ratification by The Netherlands government of ILO Convention 169 (1998) and the recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples in the Timber Procurement Assessment System in The Netherlands (2008).
- A large number of awareness raising activities in The Netherlands including the publication of a magazine, Indigo, and a website and the organisation of many public events and debates.
- The creation of the international internet platform for indigenous peoples 'Speaking4Earth', containing information, news and urgent actions on indigenous issues.
